Bloom Day Addendum: Loquat

I overlooked my loquat tree (Eriobotrya japonica), which has been blooming steadily since about Thanksgiving, for the December bloom day. The buds and blooms have survived two rounds of mild frost without damage so far.

Loquats rarely set fruit in Seattle due to the blooms' sensitivity to cold. Fingers crossed I might see some fruit this coming year.

  1. How old/large is your tree? I'm still waiting to see blooms on mine.

    1. I planted three saplings in 2006. They were each about three feet tall at the time and from one gallon pots. They have grown into a thicket about fifteen feet tall and wide (maintained that small with considerable twice-annual pruning) with trunks 2-4" in diameter. They're in full sun and get no supplemental watering. I think they started blooming about four years ago after they were about 10' tall.

  2. The completed structure is rather flimsy and probably won't stand up well to the rigours of tabletop use. If I were making static scenery for model railways then this wouldn't be a consideration!
